Can the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime drive without using gas?

The Toyota RAV4 is already one of the most popular and most successful crossover SUVs ever built. Not coincidentally, the RAV4 is also a Toyota platform that has led the way in terms of making its latest technology available. As we get closer to the day when the crossover SUV’s new plug-in hybrid goes on sale, we’re getting a lot of emails asking, ‘Can the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime drive without using gas?’ We’re still waiting for more information to be released about the 2021 RAV4 Prime, but we do know that drivers will be able to travel moderate distances without using a single drop of gasoline. Let’s take a look at what future buyers can expect to see.

Toyota RAV4 Prime Electric-Only Range

You are forgiven for not truly understanding the difference between the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The hybrid version employs an electric motor to help take some of the burdens off the engine and provide a boost in fuel economy, but it still requires the use of gasoline to push the vehicle.

On the other hand, the RAV4 Prime uses a similar system but the onboard battery system will set the two models apart. When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, owners will be able to drive nearly 40 miles using the electricity stored in the vehicle. Toyota has reported that this will be the most electric-only distance offered by a PHEV crossover SUV on the market today.

Overall fuel economy estimates

Obviously, owners of the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime are going to be attracted to the powerful and long-lasting battery system. However, when the gasoline-powered engine is needed, drivers can expect the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime to be able to achieve a 90 mpg-equivalent.

The best information we have available right now says that the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime will be delivered this summer. However, that timeline could be interrupted by the lingering effects of COVID-19 on the Toyota production cycle.
