Most new Toyota models now come with a standard smart key system that allows owners to access their vehicle without pulling their key and/or key fob out from their pocket or purse. However, occasionally some owners may come across a situation where they reach out to open their door or start their vehicle and nothing happens. We have rounded up some FAQs we hear most at the dealership and their answers below.

How do I unlock my Toyota if my smart key battery dies?
Each Toyota smart key fob has a manual key hidden inside for situations when the battery dies. There should be a small button towards the bottom of your fob that you can press to release this key. Once released, use the manual key to open your door as normal. Make sure to replace the battery in your key fob as soon as possible.
How do I start my Toyota if my smart key battery dies?
If your Toyota smart key battery has depleted enough that it can no longer automatically start your vehicle from inside your pocket or purse, you should be able to start your vehicle by placing the key fob as close to the start button as possible while pressing on the brake and pushing the start button with your other hand. Once this happens, it is a sign that you need to change your batteries ASAP or risk them dying completely. If that happens, this trick will no longer work.
How do I change the battery of my Toyota smart key?
To access the inside of your Toyota smart key fob, release the manual key from its hiding spot and use the opening created to apply gentle pressure to each side of the key fob until it snaps open. A small battery will be housed under the green microchip and should be easy to pop out and replace.
