After lodging and flights, a rental car is likely the next largest expense that travelers are likely to face. While going through a trusted rental car agency is most important, there are some things that travelers can do to keep their costs down, so there is more room left in the budget for activities and food. So, how can you save money on a rental car during business or family travel? We break it down below.

How To Save Money on A Rental Car For Business or Family Travel

Choose A Non-Airport Location

Whenever possible, try and use a rental car service that isn’t located at an airport where the daily fares are generally higher because of convenience. If you are flying, consider comparing the differences in price for car rentals with the cost of an Uber trip across town. Sometimes, the extra cost of getting to a different rental-car agency can be worth your time.

Utilize Rewards Points or Bundling

Many travel rewards cards will allow users to convert their points into free car rental services. Before booking, check to see if you have any rewards that could apply to your total. If you don’t have any credit card rewards, consider bundling your flight, hotel, and/or car rental together during booking as this can sometimes yield significant savings over purchasing everything separately.

Rent A Smaller Vehicle

While springing for a large or fancy model can be a fun splurge on a vacation, drivers interested in keeping their costs down will save significant amounts of money by choosing a basic compact car. A compact car is going to be the most affordable, but if more space is needed a compact crossover without all of the bells and whistles will be your next best choice to balance space and cost savings.

Understand Your Insurance Coverage

Car rental agencies make their largest profits on all of those little extras – including the optional insurance. While having insurance is always recommended, many drivers are already covered under their traditional auto insurance plan without even knowing it. Before you sign the paperwork and accept or decline the optional insurance, call your auto insurance provider to learn more about your current coverage. If you aren’t covered, the optional insurance may be worth the price.
