Why Isn’t My Toyota Key Fob Working?

March 31st, 2022 by

There are a number of features that make it simple and easy to operate your Toyota vehicle, and one of our favorites is the key fob. With the key fob, you can quickly and effortlessly access your vehicle, even if your arms are full and your hands are occupied.

Toyota key fobs are designed to be reliable, but they do take on a lot of wear and tear. As such, you may eventually find that your key fob isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. Don’t worry: There’s probably a simple explanation for whatever problem you’re experiencing, and an easy fix.

Top 3 Reasons For Why Your Toyota Key Fob Won’t Work

1) You’ve got a dead battery.

The most common cause of key fob error is a simple dead battery. Key fob batteries usually last for several years, but they won’t last forever. If you find that your key fob remote range has diminished, or that it takes you a few tries to open your vehicle, that likely means your battery is on its last leg. Luckily, this issue is easy to address; all you need to do is replace the battery.

2) Your key fob circuitry is damaged.

If you replace the battery and the key fob still doesn’t work, then you may have damaged mechanisms on your hands. Your key fob has a printed circuit board inside it which can become damaged due to extreme heat or cold, or to being dropped on the ground repeatedly. Open the key fob and look for signs of obvious wear and tear. If you see some damage, you may need to replace the key fob.

3) Your receiver may be damaged.

Your key fob sends a signal to a receiver in your car. While damage to the receiver is uncommon, it can happen from time to time, and will prevent the key fob from doing its job. If the receiver has gone bad, you’ll need to have it repaired at a reliable Toyota service center, like the one we boast right here at Serra Toyota.
